What we areWho we are

Kay Kalawar, Founder and Publisher

Kay Kalawar founded Nafella, a web publishing platform, for other perennial 39 year olds like herself. A mother and serial entrepreneur (who knew back in the early 90s, organic, vegetarian and whole foods would eventually take off), Kay beta launched Nafella in 2007.

A vigorous and interested people-person and a passionate explorer of humanity who is intensely curious about ideas, the creation of Nafella was a natural extension of her wide-ranging interests. Somewhere between her belief that we are the sum of all our parts, and the idea that the “truth” is an assembly of many points of view, comes Nafella: the hub of the wheel, a community of adventurers exploring ideas and connecting the dots for each other. It is a soapbox; a tool to hone your thoughts, define your goals, interact with each other and deepen understanding, to build social capital.

George Bassett, Managing Editor

George Bassett wielded a blue pencil at a publishing house for nearly seven years, editing scholarly journals in the social sciences, and then resigned to become (1) the primary caregiver for his and his wife's infant daughter and (2) a freelance editor. Twenty-two years later, he toils on at one of those jobs—and consults for Nafella. For nearly three decades he has sung in and written vocal arrangements for the jazz-, rock-, folk-, and standards-oriented a cappella quartet Cahoots, along with his wife, Nancy Wilson (no, not THAT Nancy Wilson).

Brett Wilson, Editor At Large

Brett Wilson wears many hats. And, wears each well. At once enthusiastic, rational and creative, Brett has a knack for bringing ideas together in unexpected and brilliant ways. She is an educator, environmentalist and a writer. Brett brings her sense of adventuring, her passion for horseback riding, wild-crafting and art along with her fascination of the mysteries of science to Nafella.

The word Nafella comes from the archaic English word – nafela – the hub or the place where the spokes of the wheel meet.
